As a general rule the shorter the cruise the louder it'll be and the boozier. A 2 night cruise in particular is a frenzied rush of activity with minimal sleep. The connoisseurs of cruise tend to go for the longer ones, during which one can immerse oneself fully into the simple beauty of cruising without the noise. So, what to do if you're looking for a family cruise and only have a few nights to spare (or can only afford a few nights!)? Be sure to avoid most of the theme cruises, as they tend to be louder, unless you can find a family themed cruise; and look for cruises where the focus is on certain destinations, then you are sure to have some time away if things get chaotic on board.
Sea Sickness Tablets : These should preferably be taken before the cruise, as sea sickness is something which is difficult to stop once it's started. Pack some just in case, but usually they're available free of charge on the ship.
Your camera: You'll want to page back to these memories many times in the future.
Avoid the stern area of the ship: A Even though the smokestacks are high above the deck, fluid dynamics are chaotic, and some of the exchaust fumes mix with air at the deck level. A Study has shown that the level of pollution from the funnel of the ship is higher in the areas aft of the smokestacks than in the area forward of the smokestacks (the bow). The study looked at the Emerald Princess, Holland America MS Amsterdam, Carnival Freedom and the Carnival Liberty.
Wash your ends: There are regularly outbreaks of the norovirus on cruise ships, with the most recent (at the time of writing) being on the 27th Jan 2019 on the Norwegian Spirit, after somebody reboarded in Barcelona. Picture people throwing up, the buffet being closed off with staff servicing food and the hospital bay full. It cannot be emphasised enough to wash your hands at every opportunity!
